How Much is a Speeding Ticket & How Many Points?
A full breakdown of UK speeding ticket costs, penalty points, and when a minor offence escalates to a serious court summons.
The Standard Penalty (FPN)
For the majority of minor speeding offences, you will be issued a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).
The standard cost of an FPN is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to your driving licence. Alternatively, if you are eligible and haven't attended one in the last 3 years, you may be offered a Speed Awareness Course, which costs roughly £100 but avoids the penalty points.
Court Fines: Band A, B, and C
If your speed was significantly over the limit, or you challenge the ticket in court, the Magistrates will calculate your fine based on a percentage of your Relevant Weekly Income.
Band A Fine
For moderate speeding. The fine is usually 50% of your weekly income (ranging from 25% to 75%). You will also receive 3 penalty points.
Band B Fine
For serious speeding. The fine is usually 100% of your weekly income (ranging from 75% to 125%). You face 4 to 6 penalty points, or a disqualification of 7 to 28 days.
Band C Fine
For severe speeding. The fine is usually 150% of your weekly income (ranging from 125% to 175%). You face 6 penalty points, or a massive disqualification of 7 to 56 days.
Note: Fines are capped at £1,000 for standard roads, and £2,500 for motorway offences.
