Flashed by a Speed Camera?

Don't panic. Here is exactly what happens next, how long you have to wait, and what your potential penalty could be.

What Happens Next

If you were caught speeding by a camera, the registered keeper of the vehicle will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and a Section 172 notice in the post.

The Police have exactly 14 days to deliver the NIP to the registered keeper. If it arrives after this period, you may have grounds to challenge it.

Can I check online if I was caught?

No. There is no central database or online system for the public to check if a speed camera caught them. You simply have to wait the 14 days to see if a letter arrives.

If you are not the registered keeper (for example, if you drive a company car or a lease vehicle), the 14 day rule applies to the company. They will then name you as the driver, and you will receive your own NIP later.
